What it does
Gold and silver are combined into one index. The EA trades the swings of that index.
Where the index comes from
Index S = 50 × silver − gold + 828. One lot of silver is 5,000 oz and one lot of gold is 100 oz, so the ratio is 50. With 0.01 lot on each leg, a 1-point move in the index is exactly 1 USD on the pair. The 828 only shifts the number into a readable range; it does not change P&L.
Broker silver is not 5,000 oz? The EA reads the contract size and works out the silver lot for you.
Two groups, one direction each
Expand group = sell gold + buy silver; it gains when the index rises. Shrink group = buy gold + sell silver; it gains when the index falls. You can hold both: shrink when the index is high, expand when it is low.
A position is always two legs, opened and closed together.
The zero axis and the swings
The zero axis is the index’s centre line. When the index drifts far from it, you open; when it comes back a few points, you take profit. That can happen several times a day. The hard part: the axis itself moves. The EA can compute the axis automatically and stops opening new positions when it moves too fast.
The two legs are not equal in dollars. When the gold/silver ratio shifts, the index trends.

What we do better
- Executable pricesTriggers and bookkeeping use real bid/ask. The mid price looks nicer, but you pay the spread when you fill.
- Balanced at any brokerDetects symbol suffixes, contract sizes and account currency, then sizes the silver leg; if it cannot match, it will not open.
- Two legs, one positionIf one leg fails it retries, then closes the other leg; failed closes keep retrying.
- Nothing lost on restartPositions, pending orders, trailing peaks and switches all come back after a restart or timeframe change.
- Stats rebuilt from historyHighs, lows and counts come from historical bars, so they match after a restart or on another PC, with round-trip counts and range percentiles added.
- The axis can move itselfMoving average, previous close, today’s open and more; if the axis moves too fast, new entries pause (trend protection).
- Clear pending ordersEach order shows whether it fires at ≥ or ≤ and fires once; it can send a push notification (turn on push in MT5).
- A full set of risk controlsGroup stop-loss, auto-lock on drawdown, equity stop, daily loss limit, margin guard, no-entry hours, close before the weekend, spread filter, shock pause.
- Hard to misclickUnlock button, close a single position, confirm dangerous actions twice; the status bar says why auto has not opened.
- The small thingsChinese and English UI, scales on high-DPI screens, index chart in one click; tonight’s swap shown in index points.
Real data
Historical dataDukascopy minute quotes, 14 Sept 2026 to 30 Sept 2026, 13 trading days. Every number here comes from a data file shipped with the site.
How far does it move in a day?
Using one-minute closes, the median daily range (high minus low) is 50 points: half the days moved more, half less. "Dozens of points a day" holds up.
- Median of all 13 trading days
- 50pts
- 8 days in 10 fall within
- 43.6–68.8pts
Counting highs and lows inside each minute, the median is 67.9 points. The true figure sits between the two.
There are only 13 trading days of data so far. Once there is enough, the 30-, 90- and 365-day medians are shown separately.
What does one round trip cost?
Opening and closing one pair (0.01 lot each) costs a median 2.69 points in spread, about 2.69 USD; one time in ten it is over 3.4 points.
Most expensive: server hours 1, 2, 3 (about 6, 7, 8 Beijing time in US summer time; one hour later in winter). Spreads are widest right after the daily break, so auto entries should skip them.
Cheapest: server hours 10, 11, 14.
These are Dukascopy spreads. Your broker’s spreads and commissions will differ; the EA panel shows your account’s live round-trip cost.

A risk case: the index trends too
From 22 Sept 2026 to 29 Sept 2026, the index moved −104.5 points net in 5 trading days.
Largest rise: 14 Sept 2026 to 23 Sept 2026, the index went from −336.1 to −160.1, about 176 points.
Largest fall: 23 Sept 2026 to 30 Sept 2026, the index went from −160.1 to −327.7, about 168 points.
Measured on daily highs and lows (one-minute closes), so the true swing was at least this big. With a fixed axis and averaging all the way, you sit through the whole swing, not just one leg of it.
The longest one-way leg (no 20-point pullback): −118.7 points, 23 Sept 2026 08:41 to 24 Sept 2026 21:35 Beijing time, over about 36 trading hours.
More extreme: on 30 January 2026 silver crashed. With the same formula, the index went from +1,312.4 to −155.3 in one day, about 1,468 points. At 0.01 lot per leg, that is about 1,468 USD.
Plain mean reversion, "open when it is far, add more the further it goes", digs deeper in moves like these. That is why the EA has an auto axis, trend protection, a shock pause and group stop-losses.
Fixed axis with unlimited averaging vs. our defaults
Limits of the backtest
Once the backtest is done, its limits will be listed here.
How you set the axis matters
On the same market, a different axis changes how far the index strays, how long it takes to come back, and how much further it runs first.
The EA’s current defaults (a 24-hour average as the axis, and so on) are starting values; they will be updated once the backtest is done.
| Zero axis | Distance from axis (median / 90%) | Not back within 24 h after a 20-pt move | Extra move before coming back (90%) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 24-hour average (EMA, H1) | 10.9 / 26.4 pts | 17% (12 events) | 26.5 pts |
| 24-hour average (SMA, H1) | 12.2 / 30.8 pts | 13% (15 events) | 29.3 pts |
| 12-hour average (EMA, H1) | 7.1 / 19.7 pts | 0% (16 events) | 20.7 pts |
| Previous close | 15.7 / 38.8 pts | 6% (18 events) | 30.9 pts |
| Today’s open | 14.7 / 37.9 pts | 12% (17 events) | 31.8 pts |
Sample: 13 trading days, few events, so read it as a rough guide. A move triggers at ±20 points and counts as back within ±3; averages use closed bars only.
Method
- Index = 50 × silver − gold + 828 on bid prices; cost = gold spread + 50 × silver spread.
- Server day: rolls at the New York 5 pm close, like most MT5 brokers.
- Daily highs and lows use one-minute closes (slightly smaller than the true range).
How much capital?
"Any account size works" really means: match the lot size to the capital. Smaller account, smaller lots, fewer additions.
The calculator gives a rough worst case. It does not predict returns.
Get started in three steps
Learn it by hand first, then switch on auto.
Open a hedging account
Open an MT5 account that allows hedging and check that XAUUSD and XAGUSD can be traded (some brokers call them GOLD / SILVER). Netting accounts can watch but not trade.
Install the EA and the index indicator
Get the EA and the indicator from official support, copy them into MT5’s Experts / Indicators folders, and attach the EA to any chart.
Manual first, then auto
Pick the axis mode, take-profit and lot size. Open a few pairs by hand to learn the panel, then turn on auto.

FAQ
Straight answers.
Is profit guaranteed?
No. No EA can guarantee profit. The index can trend, averaging in makes losses bigger, and spreads and swaps cost money every day. The historical data and replays on this site are from the past and do not predict the future.
What if the index trends one way?
That is the main risk. The EA has several brakes: the axis can follow the market; new entries pause when the axis moves too fast (trend protection) or the index jumps (shock pause); plus group stop-loss, auto-lock on drawdown, an equity stop and a daily loss limit. Set them for your capital. Brakes reduce losses; they do not remove them.
Do I pay overnight swap?
Yes. Each leg has its own swap, and metals usually charge triple on Wednesday. The EA panel converts one night of swap into index points, so check it before holding overnight.
My broker’s silver contract is not 5,000 oz. What now?
Nothing to calculate. On start the EA reads both contract sizes and tick values and works out the silver lot; if it cannot match within 5%, it will not open and tells you why. Suffixed names and GOLD / SILVER are recognised.
Can I use a netting account?
You can watch, not trade. In a netting account, longs and shorts on the same symbol cancel out, so the two groups cannot coexist. The EA greys out every open button and explains why. Use a hedging account.
Does my computer have to stay on?
The EA only runs while MT5 is open, so a VPS is recommended for 24-hour use. If the PC or MT5 restarts, nothing is lost: the EA rebuilds from your positions and its state file.
How is it different from the usual gold–silver hedge panels?
It has all the usual features, plus: executable-price triggers, automatic lot matching at any broker, two-leg integrity and orphan-leg repair, nothing lost on restart, history-based stats, an auto axis with trend protection, a full risk set and swap shown in points. See Features above.
Where does the data on this site come from?
Historical stats use Dukascopy minute quotes run through the same formula. The live index at the top comes from a third-party public quote, is delayed, and is not your broker’s price. Every number states its source and period.
